How to Prepare for this Diagnostic & Imaging Procedure

CT Coronary Angiography and Contrast CT Scan is performed on an OPD basis after booking a prior appointment. The patient is required to bring a recent serum creatinine report and any past medical or scan reports. The patient should not eat for about 4 hours prior to the scan and should avoid caffeinated beverages for about 12 hours prior to the scan. Drinking water is allowed until 2 hours before the scan. Smoking should be avoided before the test.

A CT Scan consent form must be filled out. Patients will be asked to change into a cotton shirt or gown provided by the hospital, and any removable metal items, jewellery, etc. will have to be removed. For a CT Coronary Angiography, heart rate and rhythm will be checked. If the heart rate is below 65 BPM and regular, then the patient will proceed with the scan. If the heart rate is higher, the patient may be prescribed medications (Tab: beta-blockers or Ivabradine) for oral consumption or an IV beta-blocker on-table just prior to the scan, as advised by the doctor. If the heart rhythm is irregular, the scan may need to be cancelled or postponed.

An intravenous cannula will be inserted in the upper arm or wrist to inject contrast. ECG electrodes will be placed on the chest to monitor the heart rate during the procedure. The patient will be instructed to hold their breath for 15-20 seconds during scanning and lie still during the scan. Intravenous contrast is then injected with a specialised pressure injector, which may produce a warm sensation. During the scan, the technician will instruct the patient regarding breath hold through an intercom and will continuously monitor the patient through the CT console. The scan will take approximately 15–20 minutes.

After CT coronary Angiography, the patient is observed for the next 15 minutes for any allergic reactions; after that, the patient can leave. Post-procedure, the patient is advised to drink sufficient water.

A minor allergic reaction to injected contrast can happen in very few cases immediately after contrast injection.
