How to Prepare for this Diagnostic & Imaging Procedure

Plain MRI scanning does not require any specific preparation. For Contrast MRI and Viability Cardiac Imaging, fasting is necessary for approximately 2 hours prior to the test, along with recent serum creatinine test reports and past medical reports. The clinician or technician has to be informed about any metallic implant or pacemaker in the body.

MRI Scan Consent and MRI Safety Questionnaire forms must be filled out. A thorough screening of the patient will be done to rule out MRI non-compatible device/implants. Patients will be asked to change into a cotton shirt or gown provided by the hospital, and any metal items, jewellery, electronic devices, etc. will have to be removed.

For Cardiac MRI, an intravenous cannula will be inserted in the forearm or wrist to inject contrast. ECG electrodes will be placed on the chest to monitor the heart rate during the procedure. The patient is repeatedly asked to hold breath during the Cardiac Scan, which will be instructed to him through an intercom. MRI non-magnetic headphones provide quality music during scanning, reducing the loud MRI scanner noise. Patients pulse rate and O2 saturation are monitored during scanning. A Cardiac MRI Scan will take a minimum of 60–80 minutes.

No specific precaution is to be taken after an MRI Scan.

MRI doesn’t use X-rays or other radiation. An MRI Scan is generally safe, painless, and poses almost no risk to the average person when appropriate safety guidelines are followed.
