How to Prepare for this Diagnostic & Imaging Procedure

Appointments for X-Ray Mammography are scheduled based on the availability of female Radiographers and Radiologists. Patients should bring their doctor’s prescription (if referred) and any relevant prior medical reports and prior Mammography reports, if available. Do not use any deodorant, powder, lotion, or perfume on the day of your exam.

Patients are requested to change into a hospital-provided shirt.

During a Mammogram, the breasts are compressed between two firm surfaces on the mammography machine. Then an X-Ray image is captured and displayed on a computer screen. Usually, two X-Rays of each breast are taken. No contrast or dye is injected during the procedure. After X-Ray Mammography, a Screening Ultrasound examination of the breasts is carried out by Radiologist.

X-Ray Mammography uses a small dose of ionising radiation and generally produces no adverse effects. Risks associated with radiation exposure may be related to the cumulative number of X-Ray examinations and/or treatments over a long period of time. If you are pregnant or suspect that you may be pregnant, you should notify your health care provider. Radiation exposure during pregnancy may lead to birth defects. Some discomfort may be felt as the breast is compressed against the X-Ray plate during the procedure. However, this compression will not harm the breast.
