How to Prepare for this Procedure
The transplant process is well-regulated by the government. A waiting list is maintained by a government body called the Zonal Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC). Allocation of a heart is done by ZTCC as per laid down rules. Patients need to be investigated to be put on the waiting list.
Patients need to report within hours of a heart being available. The surgery lasts several hours. ICU stay can be 3-5 days. The patient is there is strictly isolated during the post-operative period.
The patient is on Immunosuppressant Therapy and needs to be taking maximum precautions for infection. They will need support for medical, emotional, and physical needs.
A prolonged strict medication protocol is necessary after surgery. Frequent check-up visits to the hospital and isolation at home are also necessary.
