How to Prepare for this Procedure
Consult your Surgeon along with the ECHO report. Your Surgeon may suggest certain tests or suggest surgery immediately or may ask to wait till the disease progression reaches a certain threshold. Many Mitral Valve patients have irregular heartbeats (AF) which may benefit from an additional procedure (Maze). Some Mitral Valve cases are amenable to repair. When planned repair results are not satisfactory during the operation, a valve replacement needs to be done.
Depending on the disease progression, the patient may be advised to take complete rest and immediately prepare for the operation which includes certain tests such as ECHO, Angiography, CT scan, Stress ECHO and Blood Tests necessary for the operation. The type of diagnostic tests required depends on the type and stage of the disease. Some medications may need to be modified. Sometimes patients need to be fit from the kidney, lungs and brain health point of view and advice from the respective specialist might be taken. A complete checkup to rule out any infection anywhere in the body may be required.
Follow the treating doctor’s advice diligently before the operation. After the operation, the patient may have diet restrictions and a meticulous medication schedule with regular blood tests. Family support in this matter can go a long way.
- Medication to help the heart may be advised after the operation and should be taken diligently.
- Blood thinners are high-risk medications and will require a strict schedule under medical guidance and regular blood tests.
- To prevent infection, a strict hygiene protocol is to be maintained.
- Regular follow-up for the ongoing status of the valve function is required.
Broadly there are two types of valves - mechanical (made in factories) and tissue valves (prepared from animal tissues). A tissue valve has a finite lifespan after which it needs to be replaced. A mechanical valve lasts a lifetime but requires blood-thinning medication for a lifetime. Tissue valves are 3-5 times the cost of mechanical valves.
